Elijah Porter died on 18 January 1841 at Waterford, Saratoga, New York, USA, at age 67.1
MEMORANDA Concerning the family of ELIJAH PORTER, of Waterford, N. Y.
ELIJAH PORTER first settled in Stillwater, Saratoga County, Now York. Here he married Mary, daughter of DAVID LAWRENCE, a farmer who had removed to that township in 1790 from Dutchess County, New York, where his father, URIAH LAWRENCE, was a large landholder.
Soon after their marriage, Dr., and Mrs. Porter removed to Waterford at the extreme south end of Saratoga County; and here they lived the rest of their lives and were buried. Dr. Porter became the best and most favorably known physician of the neighborhood. His funeral is said to have been one of the largest ever held in Waterford. He died of apoplexy while returning from a professional visit at Pittstown, in Rensellaer County. He was found dead at the roadside, his lancet in hand; from which it is inferred that he know the seriousness of the attack and was doing what he could to ward it off. His widow died four years later. Dr. Porter kept in close touch with his brother, Joseph, at Pawlet, and had regular correspondence with him. Many of these letters refer to the state of their mother's health; and at one period there is frequent mention of Moses, a son of Joseph Porter, who was then residing with his uncle's family.
ELIJAH, the first child of Dr. and Mrs. Porter, died in infancy.
MARY, the second child, married JOHN STRACHAN, 2nd. His father, John Strachan, was a well-to-do Scotchman, who came to this country from Aberdeenshire, aboat 1820 and bought a large farm on the west bank of the Hudson River, six miles north of Waterford. John and Mary Strachan had three children, all of whom died In youth. They were: John Strachan 3rd who had consumption was sent to Europe, and died on the Atlantic while returning. Mary Strachan 2nd, who was killed in a runaway accident, and Lawrence Strachan, who lived only a year. Mrs. Strachan survived her husband and children. Her father-in-law, with whom she resided, died a year before her.
